Mindset And Perspective
a wonderful handshake or rabid zebra
Mindset. What is it, why is it important?
Perspective. Is this the same thing, am I full of crap?
For the moment let me say I’m not bullshitting you when I say, it is my belief the proper use and understanding of these words, can change your life.
I like definitions, so let’s do that first.
Perspective: It’s a point of view, an inner picture of what you perceive the world to be. Visual, emotional, physiological, spiritual, physical etc. It is how you know the world, whether it is that way or not. It is your truth.
Mindset: A set of attitudes. Positive, negative, glass half full or half empty. What you do when approached with a task, difficult or easy. It’s the ‘can do’ attitude or ‘can’t do’ attitude, and everything in between. It’s Yoda’s ability to pick up a space craft with his mind when Luke can’t. To grow or to stagnate.
OK, are we starting to see why these two are important? I once thought they might be the same, but when I continued to think on it I realized that one played off the other. They live in unison to either make your life better or to make it worse.
Think of it this way. If you have a bad attitude toward work, you therefore act badly at work. You gossip about all of the problems, and become more of a victim of the system instead of someone else’s champion of it. This poor attitude will skew your visual or perspective of the company. Instead of seeing the good the company does, you will only see the negative. These two words combined can make or break a team at work, home, socially, in video games you name it.
Having a poor attitude/mindset skews your vision/perspective and vice versa. So what to do about this? Resolve to first compliment instead of complain. Instead of first criticizing something or someone ask questions that probe at the underlying issue. Avoid gossip, no matter how fun and inclusive it might be. There are other examples of what you can do in Dale Carnegie’s book ‘How To Win Friends and Influence People’.
In closing, if you want to progress in life first look inward. Inward at your own perceptions, attitudes, and feelings. Scan yourself to find your first step in becoming a more influential and successful person in life and in business. I know changing my mindset and perspective have led me to write this post and many other things.
